The Ellenwood Saga was that the Ella Ellenwood was loaded in White Lake and bound for Milwaukee, Wisconsin in October, 1901, when she ran aground about 8 miles north of Milwaukee harbor. Within hours, strong winds and waves began to break up the schooner. Some of the cargo was salvaged before the ship was left to the elements.
In spring of 1902 a portion of the wooden nameplate "ELLENWOOD" washed ashore in White Lake. Incredidly, the nameplate had returned to its home port.
