After realizing that the original Thomas Point Shoal lighthouse was going to topple into the bay (it did in 1894), the Lighthouse Board worked with Congress to gain appropriated funds to build an offshore structure “on the extreme point of the shoal”. In November 1875, the offshore, Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse redux was ready for lighting. In 1877 the screwpile structure that supports the lighthouse was damaged by the crushing impact of heavy sheets of ice. The impact of the ice overturned the lens, damaging it badly enough for replacement. By 1964 it was the only manned lighthouse on Chesapeake Bay, and in 1975 was granted historical landmark status.
