"Our Lady Star of the Sea" located in Cape May, New Jersey. On July 23, 1848, under the aegis of the Diocese of Philadelphia, Father Edward Waldron blessed and opened the first Catholic Church in Cape May County. Originally called St. Mary's, the church was incorporated in 1873 and became Our Lady Star of the Sea. The church survived Cape May's Great Fire of 1878.
In 1911, Fr. Dennis Kelly, pastor, contracted architect George Lvatt of Philadelphia to design the present day building. The first mass was celebrated in the new church in 1913.
Renovated from 1972 to 1974, Our Lady Star of the Sea Church is one of Cape May's most recognized and revered buildings.
