The "Gadsby's Tavern", item #1993 is located in Alexandria, Virginia. Gadsby's Tavern combines two buildings: The Coffee House, built in 1752, and The City Hotel, added by John Wise in 1793. It did not receive its current name until John Gadsby took over the tavern in 1796. The first built portion of Gadsby's Tavern was used as George Washington's first military headquarters in 1754. Over the next 120 years, the building served as a rooming house, brothel, tenement, saloon, and as small shops. After tottering on the verge of condemnation in the 1920s, the cooperative efforts of several individuals and institutions saved the building, and restored it as a working restaurant/tavern, with a tavern museum in an adjacent building. Introduced in January 1999 and retired in December 2003.
