The Au Sable lighthouse was built to assist sailors trying to navigate, at night, the eighty miles of dark treacherous shoreline from Whitefish Point to Grand Island. The lighthouse and keepers quarters were built in the most remote of remote areas for a mainland light-station. The Lake Superior winter weather and the isolation of the lighthouse created a challenge for those responsible for appointing keepers.
